About

Experience the 'Rural Lifeline' of Mid Wales—the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway. Built in 1903 to connect remote agricultural communities, this narrow-gauge gem is world-renowned for its original Beyer-Peacock locomotives, 'The Earl' and 'The Countess.' Winding through the rolling hills of Montgomeryshire, the line features challenging 1-in-29 gradients and tight curves that create an intimate, authentic steam experience, preserving the peaceful charm of Edwardian light engineering.

Heritage

The Rural Lifeline

The Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway was built under the Light Railways Act of 1896 to boost the economy of rural Montgomeryshire. Unlike many other Welsh narrow-gauge lines which were built for industry, this line was primarily for passengers and farm produce. Today, it retains its peaceful agricultural charm, winding through the rolling hills of Mid Wales using its original 1903 Beyer-Peacock locomotives.
