A historic 7.25-mile narrow-gauge line that runs from Tywyn into the heart of the Fathew Valley. Famous as the world's first preserved railway, it is a living piece of industrial history, still operated largely by dedicated volunteers using its original 19th-century steam fleet.
World's First Preserved Railway
The Talyllyn Railway holds a unique place in history as the world's first preserved railway. Opened in 1865 to transport slate from the Bryn Eglwys quarry, it faced closure in 1950 before being saved by a dedicated group of volunteers. This act of preservation started a global phenomenon, and today the line continues to carry passengers through the beautiful Fathew Valley using its original 19th-century steam locomotives.
