A wonderful heritage railway and museum located in the heart of Preston's historic docklands. It offers a 1.5-mile (3-mile return) ride over the Ribble Swing Bridge and along the banks of the River Ribble, plus access to an extensive collection of industrial steam and diesel locomotives.
Industrial Dockland Legacy
The Ribble Steam Railway preserves the industrial history of Preston's working docks, which were once the largest inland dock in Europe. Based in a purpose-built museum and workshop, the railway operates a portion of the old docklands rail system. It serves as a sanctuary for the tough 'pug' steam locomotives and industrial diesels that once powered Britain's manufacturing and merchant fleets, highlighting the vital link between coastal shipping and the railway network.
