The Snowdon Mountain Railway is the UK's only public rack-and-pinion railway and one of the most thrilling and scenic journeys in Britain, climbing 4.7 miles from the village of Llanberis to the 1,085-metre summit of Yr Wyddfa — Snowdon — the highest mountain in Wales and England. Opened in 1896 and celebrating its 130th anniversary in 2026, the railway still operates a mixture of heritage steam and modern diesel trains, with the Heritage Steam Experience running on selected dates from May to October. At the summit, the award-winning Hafod Eryri visitor centre offers stunning 360-degree views across Snowdonia National Park, the Irish Sea, and on clear days, as far as Ireland and the Isle of Man. Services are subject to weather conditions; advance booking is essential during the busy summer season when tickets frequently sell out.
Rack and Pinion Railway
A unique rack railway that has been carrying passengers to the summit of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) since 1896. As the only public rack railway in the UK, it overcomes steep gradients to reach the highest point in Wales and England, offering spectacular views of Snowdonia from its vintage carriages.
